Chess Tournament from April 27
Leading Chess players, including Konguvel and R Balasubramaniam, are among those who have confirmed their participation in the FIDE-rated Open Chess tournament for the LA Group Trophy, beginning Coimbatore from April 27.About 150 to 200 players, including category champions at national and state levels, are expected to take part in the seven-day tournament, P K Selvamurugesan, secretary, Coimbatore District Chess Association (CDCA), said. Under-25 champion R R Laxmanan, Under-9 State champion Giriman, under-14 and junior Asian champion Shyam Nitin are some of the other top players, he told reporters here.
The tournament would be a great opportunity for budding chess talents as all participants would be getting FIDE rating, which would be a stepping stone to international fame, Selvamurugesan said. The tournament, being organised by Global Chess Academy, on behalf of CDCA, would be played on the 11 rounds Swiss System.
