Demo on Fire accidents and safety at Airport
A demonstration on fire accidents and fire safety measures was organised at the Coimbatore Airport on 17.04.2007 to mark the Fire Service week observance that began on 14.04.2007.The Airport Director, K. Hemalatha, Manager Fire Service, K. Elangovan and Assistant Manager (Fire) G.R. Ramani presided over the demonstration.The various types of fires that could break out and the kind of fire fighting measures that needed to be resorted to in each case were demonstrated to the visitors.Most of them were airport staff and their family members.A small garbage and oil fire was created and the personnel on the premises used water, chemical; foam and chemical powder extinguishers to bring it under control and extinguish it.The need for using foam and chemical on an oil fire was emphasized.When a blaze occurred in electric circuits, it was important to avoid the use of water in trying to bring the fire under control.The fire fighting mechanism, gadgets and the personnel should get ready and react within the shortest possible time by following the set standards and procedures.When fire in an aircraft was reported, within 138 seconds the personnel would have to bring it under control and rescue the passengers.The exercise was only aimed at checking the preparedness and to fine-tune them, the officials said.
The use of breathing apparatus, proximity suit to enter fire even at 1,000 degree Celsius, hydraulic power saw machine, hydraulic power cutters, expanders and crushers were also used to demonstrate the rescue mechanism that could be set in motion in case of an emergency on the premises.The use of the fully computerised and sophisticated Crash Fire Tenders (CFT) that could put out fires using powerful jets for water and foam were also put through their paces, so that the audience could become aware of the effectiveness of these modern methods.
