Railway initiates Safety campaign
Following the accident that claimed 11 lives near Kancheepuram on Monday, the Southern Railway has initiated a campaign to sensitise road users on safety measures to be observed while crossing unmanned level crossings.Railway Protection Force personnel, on Tuesday, monitored unmanned level crossings in Madurai division, especially where the movement of vehicles was more. "We have identified railway gates at M.V.M. Nagar, Kodai Road and Palani in Dindigul district and Pollachi in Coimbatore district and Manaparai in Tiruchi district to intensify patrolling," said S. Ramesh, RPF Inspector.
Ation was taken against rash driving near railway gates. Five persons were caught at MVM Nagar level crossing in Dindigul and they were slapped a fine of Rs.500 each and cases registered against them. "We take stern action only against those who approach the level crossings at great speed. Others are only cautioned about danger of reckless driving." The RPF personnel also advised drivers to stop the vehicles when they approach unmanned railway gates and proceed only after ensuring that trains were not coming in both the directions
