Water will not be a problem in this summer in Ooty

Water will not be a problem in this hill station during this summer. Commissioner of Udhagamandalam Municipality Seeni Ajmal Khan told The Hindu here on Monday that even before the dry spell was broken a few days ago, the civic administration was confident of meeting the drinking water requirements of the locals and the visitors. The current wet spell had boosted that confidence. Some of the reservoirs, including those that had very little water, had benefited from the almost daily wettings. However, the municipality would not give room for complacency. The available water would be distributed judiciously. Equitable supply would be ensured. Supply of 90 litres a head a day would be maintained, Mr. Khan said.

Since there were complaints of improper distribution in some areas such as the Sree Ayyappa Temple hill where a large number of Government officials were residing, the Nilgiris Collector Santosh K. Misra inspected the area on Monday.Mr. Khan said adequate steps had been taken to ensure that an artificial water scarcity was not created. Diversion of water for commercial or agricultural purposes would be viewed seriously. Stringent action would be taken against persons utilising the demand for water to make a fast buck.Residential areas such as Stone House would be supplied water through tankers until alternative arrangements were made. Meanwhile, the rain had forced the district administration to keep its flood control machinery in a state of preparedness. The thundershowers had triggered mudslips in a few parts of the district. On Monday, traffic on Udhagamandalam-Avalanchi road was disrupted for sometime owing to a mudslip.
