Agitation at various places for Ramar Sethu Bridge Protection

Former State president of Bharatiya Janata Party, C.P. Radhakrishnan addressing the Hindu outfits to protect Ram Sethu in Tirupur on Wednesday.The police on Wednesday removed more than 2,000 persons when the cadres of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and activists of the various Hindu outfits staged road roko agitations for protecting the Ramar Sethu bridge at Rameshwaram.

The Ramar Sethu Bridge Protection Committee had been organising series of agitations and demonstrations urging the Centre to implement the Sethusamudram ship canal project on a different route since the dredging works on the route chosen now would endanger the historical bridge.As part of a nation wide call given for road roko the BJP cadre and activists of Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS), Hindu Munnani, Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP), Bharatia Mazdoor Sangh, Akhila Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad and other movements resorted to a road roko at over 24 places in Coimbatore district and at over four places in Coimbatore City.
Agitation was reported at Tirupur Old bus stand, new bus stand, Pollachi, Gounder Mills, Mettuppalayam, Annur, Udumalpet, Periyanaickenpalayam, Karamadai, NGGO Colony, Kanuvai, Kovilpalayam, Saravanampatti, Kavundampalayam and Malumichampatti.In Coimbatore City the agitators blocked roads at Ganapathy, Gandhipuram and Avanashi Road flyover.The agitators raised slogans demanding that the Sethusamudram plan should be altered .All those removed by the police were released in the evening.
