Traffic management regulatory system soon

The Coimbatore City Police will soon get a traffic management regulatory system at a cost of Rs. 4 crore wherein traffic flow and violations at nearly 25 signals could be monitored at the police control room, said the Commissioner of Police, Coimbatore City, C.K. Gandhirajan on Tuesday.
He was talking to reporters after inaugurating Road Safety Week observance along with the Collector, Neeraj Mittal at the Lakshmi Mills Junction on Avanashi Road.Mr. Gandhirajan and the Deputy Commissioner of Police (Traffic), S. Manoharan, said that personnel on duty at the control room monitoring the traffic flow would give instructions for remedial measures in the event of traffic congestion.The absence of a policeman at a traffic signal was no guarantee that the offences would go unnoticed.Violation of traffic rules, stop line at signals would get registered on the camera and the control room would automatically generate notices and send the same to the violator based on the vehicle registration number.

Similarly, police officers’ at signals would carry a hand-held computer printer hooked to the centralised server. This would enable them to issue memos to traffic violators instantly.Earlier, Mr. Neeraj Mittal inaugurated the celebrations by flagging off two campaign floats of the City Police.The floats depicted tragic accidents, illustrations on the cause of accidents and the penal provisions for each and every violation besides illustrations of good and bad driving/riding habits.The floats would visit traffic signals during peak hours to draw the attention of the motorists to refrain from violations.The Commissioner of Police also handed over reflective jackets and mega phones to policemen.

The Collector and Commissioner also inaugurated a newly-designed traffic umbrella.The movable umbrella with wheels would have a shelter to protect constables from rain and sun.It would also be used as a barricade during traffic diversion.The umbrella costing around Rs. 20,000 would be provided to most of the road junctions in a phased manner.The Commissioner along with Deputy Commissioners of Police, P. Sugumar (Law and Order), S.V. Karuppasamy (Head Quarters) and M. Balakrishnan (Armed Reserve) also kick-started a propaganda campaign for affixing stickers on accident prevention and safe road habit messages. Road space
Speaking at the function, Mr. Neeraj Mittal said that every effort was being made to improve the three Es that concerned road safety namely Engineering, Education and Enforcement.

With the existing road space, he said that 300 to 400 vehicles were getting added every month.Mr. Gandhirajan sought the cooperation of motorists to make the City an accident-free.The highlight of the observance was folklore artistes from Puducherry and Mandya in Karnataka wearing the costumes of Gods and Goddesses. They offered advice to motorists on the need to comply with traffic rules.Artistes with the costumes of bear, ghost and skeletons targeted the violators of stop line, pedestrian crossing, use of cellular phones and failure to wear helmets and made them mend their ways.The officers said that we believe in preaching not penalising.
