DRDO's Chief Controller's Speech

The Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) has got the technology to develop non-oil solutions. The government has to commercialise it to reduce the dependence on oil,” A. Sivathanu Pillai, Chief Controller of DRDO, said on Monday. Addressing reporters at Bharathiar University here, he said non-oil measures should aim for affordability and clean energy.

“Now, 80 per cent of electricity is being produced from oil. Alternative sources of energy must be tapped for maintaining oil resources. Fuel cell technology and electrolysis of seawater to generate hydrogen and solar energy are the best alternative sources. Fuel cell energy is a good option for transport.” “Titanium and thorium are also found in the country. These can also be used for generating energy,” he said. But bio-fuels were not good alternatives, as they could contain pollution.

As for BrahMos, Mr. Pillai, who is also Chief Executive Officer and Managing Director of BrahMos Aerospace, said the Indian Army is the only one to possess the world’s fastest cruise missile. “There is no other missile to match it in speed, precision and power.”
