Coimbatore likely to get Passport Seva Kendra

The passport office here is likely to get a Passport Seva Kendra, manned by a private agency, by 2010. It will receive applications and processing the same. It will ensure speedy processing of applications.The Passport Officer, Coimbatore, B. Balamurugan, said that in the first phase the Kendra would come up in Bangalore. Coimbatore’s request for the same would be taken up in the second phase by 2010.

The Kendra will interact with passport applicants and scan documents required. Staff from the Ministry in the rank of Assistant or Deputy Passport Officers or Superintendents would coordinate the works.The Ministry staff would do Pison checking, indexing, granting, allotment, printing and despatch. Crucial and confidential works would continue to remain with the Ministry staff. The Passport Office here would provice 4,000 sq ft for the Kendra.

Mr. Balamurugan said that in coordination with the National Informatics Centre the Passport Office here would instal the necessary equipment and gadgets for introducing the system of status enquiry through Short Message Service (SMS) on mobile phones. A passport applicant could send in the file number as SMS and know the status.

The Passport Office would soon get ten more staff. The passport office has cleared applications pending till July.Works relating to despatch of passports for applications filed in August and September have begun, he added.
