Notebooks at subsidised rates

With schools set to reopen next month, the Jain Jagruti Centre, an organisation formed by the Jain community in Coimbatore, has brought in relief to parents. At the sale of notebooks organised by the centre at Gujarati Samaj they can pick up a bagful of books for subsidised rates.

"Education is becoming a costly affair and with the cost of notebooks going up every year, parents find it difficult to bear the educational expenses of their children," says Jayesh P. Doshi, a committee member of the Jain Jagruti Centre.Started as a social service, the centre has been conducting this sale continuously for the last ten years with the response from the public becoming better each year."We printed only a few books fearing wastage and loss when we began the sale. But, this year, we have printed around 20,000 books and expect all of them to be sold," he says. The sale has about six types of notebooks, which can also be used by college students, Mr. Jayesh adds.

The centre has approached schools and other select groups of educational institutions to spread word about the sale. It plans to provide other stationery materials at subsidised rates from next year. The sale will be open on the next two Sundays from 10 a.m. to 12.30 p.m. at the Gujarati Samaj Hall.
