An aged woman waits with bated breath amid a crowd of agitated residents during an eviction drive on Mettuppalayam Road in the city on Friday.Resistance to eviction of people living in nearly 60 houses on a plot of land belonging to a private party, based on a court order, led to tense moments near the City Police checkpost on Mettuppalayam Road this morning.Officials commenced the eviction drive amid heavy police protection. Reinforcements in large numbers were deployed at the place, anticipating trouble and to pre-empt the same without allowing matters to escalate. The land that housed more than 60 houses for the last several years was under dispute and a private party claimed ownership over the same and had moved a court in Coimbatore seeking directions for evicting the occupants. The court verdict was in favour of the private party and a panel led by a lawyer was appointed for carrying out the eviction.Even as the personnel along with the machinery entered the land, public resistance came up, leading to frayed tempers. The authorities, citing the court order, convinced the occupants to vacate the place, defusing tense moments experienced for awhile.
