Udhagamandalam: There is no cause for worry on the tea front, said the Khadi Board Minister, K. Ramachandran, while addressing a press conference here.Stating that things have been looking up for the past one year, he said that while the average price being paid for a kg of raw leaves now by the Industrial Cooperative (INDCO) tea factories was Rs. 8, other factories were giving Rs. 9.


During 2008-2009, Pakistan was likely to lift a huge quantity of tea. It will help the small tea growers to a significant extent.During the ensuing visit of the Local Administration Minister, M.K. Stalin, to Ooty, the tea growers could look forward to some good news.Pointing out that the efforts were on to improve the Siriyur-Thengumarahaada Road with the help of the Forest Department, he said that work on erecting a 110 kv sub-station was now in progress at Gudalur.Another sub-station would come up at Uppatti near Gudalur.Adverting to the long-standing Section 17 land problem in Gudalur and surroundings, the Minister said that a Central Empowerment Committee would be visiting the area from May 27 to 29.

A water supply scheme would be implemented at Cherangode at an estimated cost of Rs. 6.30 crore. Since the Kadanad firka was drought-prone, a scheme to supply water to 14 villages in the area from the Parsons Valley Hydel Reservoir would be implemented.Steps would be taken to establish a medical college here and an Arts College at Coonoor.Pointing out that the roads here would be improved this year, the Minister said that efforts were on to remove restrictions on constructing multi-storied buildings in the Nilgiris.
