Permanent Border Security Force (BSF) base would become operational near here by October this year to cater to the emergency security needs of Tamil Nadu and neighbouring states.A Shillong-based battalion is expected to be relocated at the new base at Kittampalayam, about 45 km from here, off the Avanashi Road, highly placed BSF sources said.The Rs 60 crore reserve battalion project, coming up at a sprawling 75-acre plot, would have more than 340 staff quarters, an administrative block, hospital, school, community centre and a family welfare centre.Besides a firing range, the base would also have bachelor's accommodation for over 1,000 BSF men.The base could accommodate 2,000 personnel in total, they said.The project was kept pending for some time due to paucity of funds, the sources said, adding that around 20 temporary sheds are being constructed at a cost of Rs. one crore for temporary stay of some BSF personnel.P K Mishra, IG, BSF, recently visited and inspected the progress of the works.With Central government allocating adequate funds, the project was expected to be ready by the end of next month.As the base was placed at a strategic location, it would help Tamil Nadu and neighbouring states of Kerala and Karnataka during emergency situations, the sources said.
