Elephant attacks again one man
Even as the jumbo operation by the forest officials for chasing a herd of four wild elephants back into the jungles using tamed/trained kumki elephants made some significant headway, the herd while marching its way to the jungle attacked Mayilsamy (40), a resident of Ammanpudur near Podanur, in the small hours of Thursday. On Sunday night, the herd had strayed into human habitations and was noticed near Sundarapuram. The confused herd finally reached Appanaickenpatti near Sulur on Wednesday. The forest officials had prepared a plan of action and identified an ideal route for putting the herd back on its track towards the jungle. With the help of the police, the forest personnel equipped with crackers and powerful searchlights, formed a cordon on either side to keep the herd on the right track while the kumkis kept pushing the herd from behind. The three kumki elephants with their mahouts started pushing the herd on Tuesday and it reached Chettippalayam once again on Wednesday on its way back. While on the move, the herd on Thursday damaged the compound wall of a building near Podanur besides attacking Mayilsamy, who was rushed to Coimbatore Medical College Hospital. On Thursday morning, the herd finally moved towards the jungle and it reached vacant lands near Eachanari Vinayakar temple. With adequate water close to a stone quarry and mercury level soaring, the herd refused to move further resisting the kumkis.
