Handicraft artisans will get a Rs 316.81-crore marketing support during the 11the Plan period under a new policy cleared by the government today.The Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs (CCEA) approved the ‘Marketing Support and Services Scheme’ for these artisans.The money would be used for domestic and international marketing and publicity of the products of these artisans, the Union Finance Minister, Mr P Chidambaram told reporters here.“Under the scheme, handicraft artisans will get enhanced opportunities for access to domestic as well as international high-end markets and various marketing channels, enabling them to achieve full-time employment, better returns on their products and new opportunities for employment in rural areas,” Mr Chidambaram said.Besides, the scheme would also meet dues amounting to Rs 26.32 crore under the old Marketing Support and Services Scheme, including the erstwhile export promotion scheme implemented during the 10th Plan period.Meanwhile, the Cabinet approved setting up of Sardar Vallabhai Patel Institute of Textiles Management at Coimbatore at an investment of Rs 29 crore during the 11th Plan period. Information and Broadcasting Minister, Mr P R Dasmunsi refuted rumours that the plans to set up institute would be shelved. The decision will not only scotch the rumours but also support the institute, Mr Dasmunshi said.
