A surgery to reconstruct the voice box of a girl has won the Best Innovative Treatment Award of the Tamil Nadu ENT Association. ENT (ear, nose and throat) surgeon V. Anand of MCV ENT Trust Hospital at Pollachi in Coimbatore district won the award for reconstructing the voice box of a17-year-old girl. The voice box had been damaged by juvenile laryngeal papillomatosis. It had caused a block in the airway and this had affected her speech. The girl had undergone laser microlaryngeal operations 27 times in Mumbai. After she was referred to MCV Trust Hospital in Pollachi, four operations were done over a year to reconstruct the voice box. The procedures involved taking a mould from the voice box in the body of a 17-year-old girl who had died.
