Govt's assurance for studies
Mini Thomas Abraham, a postgraduate rank holder, being felicitated by K. Venkatapathy, Union Minister of State for Law and Justice, at the convocation of the SNMV College of Arts and Science in the city on Saturday. The Central Government is taking steps to ensure that nobody is deprived of higher education. Nationalised banks have been instructed to sanction educational loans to the needy students, according to K. Venkatapathy, Union Minister of State for Law and Justice.
“The Centre is also aware of problems faced by marginalised people and has come out with a policy to ensure inclusive development. There are several schemes proposed for an outlay of Rs. 1,74,000 crore,” the Minister said while delivering a convocation address at Shri Nehru Maha Vidyalaya College of Arts and Science here on Saturday.Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme, Rural Health Mission, Urban Renewal Mission and Bharat Nirman Project were some of the schemes that would alleviate the sufferings of the toiling masses.
Youth should also work for inclusive development, he said and added that technology must move from universities to villages. However, he felt that Government efforts alone were not sufficient to meet the challenges.Universities, non-governmental organisations and private sectors must involve themselves in developing rural India. It was high time the top brains of universities and corporate sectors thought about rural reconstruction, Mr. Venkatapathy said.
“Even as we talk about information super highways and shrinking world, we should not forget that a vast majority of our population still live in the worst kind of poverty. More than half of our population has never made a single phone call in their life. It will be a shame if we are not able to provide access to basic needs to them at least within the next decade,” he said.
He urged the new graduates to “go out and learn the ways of the world”.He told them to enrich themselves with knowledge about latest technologies and innovations so that they could return and employ that knowledge to “bring smiles on the faces of hapless brothers and sisters”.Secretary of the college M.M. Bhuradia, president Mangilal Jain and principal T. Kulandaivelu spoke.
