More students join in road saftey patrol
The City Police on Friday introduced more than 200 Students from ten schools into the Road Safety Patrol at a function held on the Police Recruit School Grounds on Avanashi Road. The City Police Commissioner, C.K. Gandhirajan on Friday presented headgears, arm bands and whistle cords to more than 200 students from ten schools marking the induction of these students into the Road Safety Patrol. With road space shrinking and vehicular population increasing day-by-day, the City roads of late resemble the chaotic traffic conditions prevailing in any metropolitan city. To combat the growing traffic congestion and increasing accidents, the City Police have been updating their traffic management plans frequently.
One such step was the formation of Road Safety Patrols in almost all educational institutions, so that the students could supplement the efforts of the police by stepping out to regulate traffic in and around the school premises, City Police Commissioner, C.K. Gandhirajan said.If the students came forward to control the traffic near the school zones by regulating the parking of vehicles and enable the pedestrians to cross the road, the manpower starved police machinery could focus their attention on other core areas of policing such as ensuring traffic flow and enforcement of rules to curb the road violations.
The training of school students on road safety, road rules and traffic signs was done in the last few months to equip them well before they took over the task. These students assisted by a police constable and a faculty of the school would now take on the job of ensuring semblance of discipline on the roads. The headgears provided to the students in the form of “barrette” would have the RSP emblem and an arm band to distinguish them from others on the road besides a whistle cord to draw the attention of the motorists. This exercise besides supplementing the efforts of the police would also help in making the younger generation conscious of road safety and the need for adhering to the rules of the road. The Deputy Commissioner of Police (Traffic), S. Manoharan said that training of students and their induction into RSP would be a continuous affair.Participation of more schools would actually help in ensuring discipline in school zones during the peak hours.
