Tirupur knitwear exports cross Rs. 9,600 crore
TIRUPUR: The bustling business of knitwear exports from this small town touched a new high. Garment exports crossed Rs.9,600 crore between January and December 2006.
Disclosing this at a textile testing symposia organised by British Textile Machinery Association here on Friday, Tirupur Exporters Association president A. Sakthivel said the growth was on expected lines. The total cotton knitwear exports from the town were Rs. 8,000 crore in the previous year.
With the absence of authentic data owing to the dismantling of quota system two years ago, Mr. Sakthivel said they had arrived at the figure after getting details from bankers here.
"In exports, everything is transparent. The exporters have to get the money from buyers only through banks and the money cannot come to us directly from importers. We have collected data from nearly 45 banks operating here," he explained.
He said the exporters themselves fixed the target for every year. He hoped they would cross Rs.12,000-crore mark by 2008-end.
Reasons
On the reasons behind this impressive growth, Mr. Sakthivel listed various points including entrepreneurship, investment in modernisation, technology upgradation, flexibility with buyers, design and delivery capability and raw material availability
