Noyyal River restoration project planned to begin in April at Coimbatore

Proposals to be prepared according to global norms by March 7
RESURRECTION PLANS: Noyyal Advisory Committee formed by Siruthuli-Coimbatore holding discussions in the city on Saturday for drafting a proposal on restoration of the river.
Coimbatore: Noyyal Advisory Committee's meeting on Saturday resolved to draw detailed proposals to initiate the Noyyal river restoration project by the first week of April.
The river runs through Coimbatore and Erode districts right from the foothills of Western Ghats for nearly 160 km.
The meeting attended by 13 members suggested that a Noyyal stakeholder body and a Noyyal Restoration Plan formulation committee be formed to expedite the restoration process.
It was also decided to prepare a proposal according to acceptable global norms to file the same with appropriate organisations for getting financial assistance. The entire proposal would be made ready by March 7.
Long-term goals
The restoration process would address immediate, medium and long-term goals. Regular feedback from all stakeholders would be sought.Tamil Nadu would be one of the most preferred States that could access resources in a rapid manner and therefore a good proposal with assistance and guidance from the State Government along with participation from Siruthuli and stakeholders would make the task easy, the meeting decided.
Preliminary research
The committee would do preliminary research in collaboration with various Governmental organisations, besides seeking assistance from abroad. This would perhaps be the first ever private and public initiative with regard to a long-term river restoration project, the meeting observed.
The components of river Noyyal restoration would include primary desilting of the river, cleaning of channels connected to the river, strengthening of bunds, and developing stakeholders from all sections of society to ensure sustainability.
On completion of the detailed project, the restoration drive would begin by the first week of April initially with funds from Siruthuli, a public initiative for conservation of water bodies.
