Demo of spy robot by Coimbatore collage students

Showcasing technical talent at `Vision 2007'

FUTURISTIC CONCEPTS: Students of Coimbatore-based Sri Krishna College of Engineering demonstrate their surveillance and spy robot at `Vision 2007' held at Anna University, Chennai, on March 8th 2007.

CHENNAI: From hardcore technical talk on embedded systems to robots playing soccer, `Vision 2007', organised by the Electronics and Communication Engineers Association of Anna University, was a platform to explore a range of topics.Inaugurated here on March 8th 2007, the four-day event has students from about 80 colleges in India participate in workshops, make presentations and experiment in their pet areas.

Vice-Chancellor D. Viswanathan and chairman and chief inventor of Matrixview Arvind Thiagarajan participated in the inaugural function. "It is important for students to take part in events that give scope for practical application of concepts learnt in class. This event does just that," Mr. Thiagarajan, also an alumnus of the college, said.

Students of St.Xavier's Engineering exhibited a model of a war-field robot. A sensor placed in the robot would detect enemies, explained the participant.

The team from Kongu Engineering College came up with a system that enabled use of pre-paid cards for electricity consumption.
"The card has been charged to cover a certain number of units of electricity. When the last unit is about to be used, an alarm goes off, alerting the user to recharge his card," said K. Rajasekar. His teammates said the system would come in handy in homes where a single person lived, consuming very little power.

Ever faced the problem of being on the phone in a noisy environment and not being heard at the other end? Students of Thiagaraja College have thought of a prospective solution.
"By recording the regular user's voice, we can follow the pattern of the timber in his or her voice. We have used an application that would enhance this particular voice level whenever there is excessive noise in the environment," said S. Elavar Kuzhali.

Students chose topics such as surveillance and spy robots, power lines for broadband facility, and other robotics, hardware and software-related projects. From about 60 exhibits, the best project would be awarded a prize.

The event features parallel sessions covering technical workshops conducted by industry experts, quizzes and presentations. `Quadrathlon', scheduled for Friday, would see robots designed by students fight it out in events such as Sumo wrestling and Soccer.
