Tamil Nadu to refurbish hotels to boost tourism Coimbatore: Hotels under the Tamil Nadu Tourism Development Corporation will be renovated at a cost of Rs 3.5 crores as part of measures to boost tourism in the state.
Hotels in Coimbatore and Udhagamandalam will be modernised at a cost of Rs 35 lakhs and Rs 55 lakhs respectively and the rest will be spent on hotels in Madurai, Rameshwaram, Kodaikanal and Mahabalipuram, state Tourism Minister Suresh Rajan told reporters here today.
A sum of Rs 135 lakhs has been sanctioned for improving tourist spots like Vellangiri Hills and Kovai Kuttralam in Coimbatore district, where artificial waterfalls, gardens, bridges and approach roads will be built.
Tamil Nadu attracted 13.35 lakh foreign tourists and 39 lakh domestic tourists last year, with an annual growth of 23 per cent, Rajan said.
Earlier, inaugurating the three-day Hospitality Job Fair-2007 organised by a private college here, Rajan said hospitality is a prime area to be cared for by those in the tourism industry.
Though the government and private sectors are developing existing and pro-tourism infrastructure wherever required, there would be no meaning in developing tourism if hospitality is not handled properly, Rajan said.
Every Rs 10 lakhs invested in tourism created 48 per cent jobs, and employment generated by tourism will rise to 80 lakhs new jobs in 10 years, he said.
