State level College Teachers conference on Mar-02

The 16th state-level conference of the Tamil Nadu Government Collegiate Teachers' Association (TNGCTA) beginning here tomorrow would urge both the Central and State Governments to reallocate the education cess levied for developing infrastructure in educational institutions.
This would be the major resolution at the two-day conferece, since over Rs.5,000 crore was being levied annually, but majority of the amount was diverted for other departments, the TNGCTA Vice-President K Subramanian told reporters here today.

The conference would also discuss about the nearly 1,300 vacancies in 67 government arts and science colleges including the College of Education, mostly in rural areas, as Government had stopped recruitment since 2000, without replacing those who retired. On an average 300 teachers retired annually.

The association also wanted the State Government to pay more attention to infrastructure development, like classrooms, since teachers were taking classes on verandah or under the tree in some colleges, Subramanian said. The conference, with the theme "education for all" would be inaugurated by state Higher Education Minister Dr K Ponmudi in which vice-chancellors of Bharathiar, Bharatidasan and Tamil universities would attend, he said.
