10 lakh for renovation of mini zoo at VOC Park

The renovation of the Coimbatore Corporation's mini zoo at VOC Park has begun at Rs. 10 lakh.Owing to various proposals for expanding the zoo or to shift it to the erstwhile compost yard at Kavundampalayam for creating a replica of the Nilgiris Biosphere Reserve, the regular maintenance has suffered for the last four to five years. The zoo, spread over an area of 3.85 acres, has 27 species of birds, nine species of mammals and six species of reptiles. The zoo and the adjacent VOC Park are the only avenues of recreation within the city for the Coimbatoreans. With schools being closed for summer holidays, Mayor R. Venkatachalam and Corporation Commissioner P. Muthuveeran have sanctioned the fund to give a facelift to the zoo, says S. Thirukkumaran, Director of the zoo.

The works include provision of pathway with interlocking tiles at the entrance and drinking water facility for the visitors. Besides, the Corporation is providing heat- resistant roofing for the cages to keep the animals cool especially when the mercury levels are soaring. The aviary moat for the water birds and the net covering the moat will be renovated. To avoid foul smell, the sewage/drainage disposal line in the moat will be repaired to periodically flush the tank that could hold 40,000 litres of water. The moat at present has Rose Pelican, Adjudant Stork, Painted Stork, Night Heron, While Ibis, Purple Moorhen, Red Jungle Fowl and Carmorand birds. The enclosures for the peacock and white peacock are also being spruced up, Mr. Thirukkumaran adds.

The enclosure for the reptiles has 26 snakes such as cobra, rat snake, green snake, water snake, Russel's viper and Indian Rock Python. The roof for the 13 enclosures for reptlies will have a small glass tile to enable sunlight to pass through. To avoid mischief by the visitors the entire enclosure will have tiles. The cages accommodating 11 jackals and five Rhesus Monkeys, one Nilgiri Langur and 14 Bonnet Macaques are also being spruced up, Mr. Thirukkumaran says.
