2 new Assembly segments in the Coimbatore region
The Election Commission of India's Delimitation Committee for Assembly and Parliamentary Constituencies in Tamil Nadu has proposed creation of two new Assembly segments in the region.It has also proposed scraping of two existing constituencies besides bifurcating three. The total number of constituencies will be 16 as against the present 14.The committee has suggested bifurcation of the biggest Assembly segment in the district - Tirupur into two namely Tirupur North and South.The other new Assembly segments proposed are Sulur, Kavundampalayam and Anaimalai. The constituencies that will cease to exist as per the proposals are Perur and Pongalur.The areas in Pongalur Assembly segment will come under Palladam. Some of the areas to be carved out of Palladam will form part of the new Sulur Assembly segment.Thondamuthur Assembly segment is being bifurcated into two with Kavundampalayam as new Assembly segment. Areas till now in Perur Assembly segment will now form part of the Thondamuthur Assembly segment.Pollachi Assembly segment is being bifurcated into two. Part of areas presently with Pollachi and a portion of the areas from Valparai reserved Assembly segment will form the new constituency- Anaimalai.The other constituencies remain unchanged. Avanashi and Valparai would continue to be the reserved constituencies for Scheduled Caste candidates.Regarding parliamentary constituencies, Nilgiris constituency would continue to have Mettupalayam and Avanashi Assembly segments besides Kavundampalayam instead of Thondamuthur. Nilgiris parliamentary constituency would have Udhagamandalam, Coonoor and Gudalur as well. Dharapuram Assembly segment that till now rested with the Pollachi parliament segment will go with the Erode Lok Sabha seat.
Thondamuthur, Kinathukkadavu, Pollachi, Anamalai, Udumalpettai and Valparai Assembly segments will form the Pollachi parliamentary constituency.Tirupur South, Palladam, Sulur, Coimbatore North, Coimbatore South and Singanallur Assembly segments would form part of the Coimbatore parliamentary constituency.Tirupur North Assembly segment would form part of the Gobichettipalayam parliamentary constituency.
Notification
Copies of the delimitation notification are available with the Chief Electoral Officer and the District Collectors. Any objections and suggestions in this regard should be sent to the Secretary, Delimitation Commission, Nirvachan Sadan, Ashoka Road, New Delhi- 110001 on or before 5 p.m. of April 18.
Public sitting
The commission will consider the suggestions and objections at a public sitting at Corporation Kalaiarangam, R.S. Puram, Coimbatore on May 17 at 10 a.m., for the constituencies in Salem, Namakkal, Dharmapuri and Krishnagiri districts and at 2.30 p.m. in respect of the constituencies in the Nilgiris, Erode, Karur and Coimbatore districts.
