Biometric based Cash-dispensing Kisok by Coimbatore Firm
Technology reaches common man. If an on-going project comes off, a resident in a remote village can just walk to an automated cash dispenser nearby, use a touch screen kiosk and collect the required amount. AGT Electronics, Coimbatore, is developing a self-service, biometric, linux-based, cash-dispensing machine.Generically, it can be employed for mass distribution of cash. The first prototype of the machine, which can be logged in with a smart card and which can dispense money in a single denomination, has been developed. In another 8-10 weeks, a more sophisticated version will be ready. In this second prototype, the beneficiary log in will be secured with biometrics and money dispensed in two denominations. The Electronics Corporation of Tamil Nadu has funded the project.
AGT Electronics Managing Director K. Thangaraj says the machine ensures efficient cash dispensation besides providing the integrity of the database. It marks an effort at making the ordinary user feel the technology. The challenge, he says, is to ensure it does not give room for any tampering, and at the same time provides access to genuine users. Further, the operation should be simple and user-friendly.
Once the product is developed, it should go through field evaluation, fine-tuning, and made according to the customer demand. ELCOT Managing Director C. Umashankar says the system will be provided wireless connectivity. The Corporation will also have tie-ups for marketing the kiosks, "which are more than Automated Teller Machines." The market potential is huge. For instance, it can be employed by banks in rural areas and can be used for distribution of dole under different government schemes.
