4th Tirupur Book Exhibition inaugurated
The Booksellers and Publishers Association of South India will organise book exhibitions in all corporation areas in Tamil Nadu with the support of the Government, association president Gandhi Kannadasan said here on 13.04.2007.He was speaking at the inaugural function of the Fourth Tirupur Book Exhibition - 2007, organised by Pinnal Book Trust and Bharathi Puthagalayam at the Town Hall Grounds.In his address, he said that the there had been a sea-change in the sale of books in the State in the last ten years.Seven or ten years ago such a large number of books would not have been sold, Mr.Kannadasan said, adding that Rs.16 crore worth of books had been sold at Chennai Book Fair held in January.He said Coimbatore and Tirupur had always topped in the sale of books in the State. In the recent book exhibition held at Madurai, the publishers and booksellers had sold books worth Rs.6 crore. It had been a surprise for many.The association president said that the "welcome trend" had influenced the mindset of publishers too.
"Earlier, publishers gave priority to bringing out novels. Now the mindset has changed. Books on self-improvement and self-confidence are the hottest selling topics now,'' he added.Coimbatore Collector Neeraj Mittal inaugurated the ten-day book fair at the venue.South India Hosiery Manufacturers' Association (SIHMA) president Mohan P. Kandasamy launched the first sale, and SIHMA secretary N. Kandasamy received the first copy. Veenus K. Palanisamy presided over the meeting. About 70 publishers and booksellers are participating.
