Coimbatore Corporation's black and white policy

The Coimbatore Corporation has started installing boards, containing names and phone numbers of contractors and also of the civic body, at sites where repair or development works are being carried out.The boards will also have the names and phone numbers of the local councillor and other details such as the dates on which the works begin and are supposed to be completed. The cost of the works will also be mentioned."We will have such boards even if the work is only for four or five days," Mayor R. Venkatachalam said on 14.04.2007."The aim is to keep the people informed of what we are doing, as part of our efforts to ensure transparency in the Corporation's functioning," he said.

The Corporation has put up such boards on Vincent Road, repairs to which have been taken up at Rs. 25 lakh. "The boards have been installed at two points - where this road meets Big Bazaar Street and also Palakkad Road," he said.The Mayor said that it was important that the people who used the road every day to know when the work would be completed. With the mentioning the cost, they would also know of the scale of work."We have made a fresh start on Tamil New Year's Day. Local Administration Minister M.K. Stalin spoke in Chennai on Friday of the need for such an approach by the local bodies. We started it today itself so that Coimbatore could lead the way," he said.The Mayor said he had asked the officials concerned to have the Corporation's phone number also mentioned on the boards. This would help people bring to the civic body's notice the lack of quality in the works or any other irregularity that they noticed.

The Mayor said the underground drainage line on Big Bazaar Street would be replaced in a month.A section of the underpass at Lanka Corner had been closed to do the work.A bigger line would prevent drainage burst and stagnation at the underpass, he said.
