Cotton price hike going to upset textile mill
The Cotton Corporation of India (CCI) decision to hike cotton prices would only encourage the private trade to further jack up their rates which would upset the small textile mills' raw material planning; the South India Small Spinners Association (SISSPA) President, Mr R. Kuppusamy said here on April 4.Mr Kuppusamy, in a statement said CCI had in the past 10 days jacked up its prices by Rs 1,000 per candy (of 356.65 kg) and this had made the CCI's prices far higher than prevailing ones.To help small and medium-scale textile units and take up bulk orders, the Sisspa is planning to prepare a vision document; Kuppusamy said here. The president further clarified that the statement would be finalised by the association soon and even those who have medium or small-scale units should be helped to export who could jointly identify potential export markets even for cotton yarn and take up orders for bulk quantities. However, what was needed primarily was awareness among the units as they should be guided to equip themselves for such orders since most of the small-spinners now supply yarn to the local market, he added. The small mills which usually have 8,000 to 12,000 spindles should integrate their capacities, even if it be for small volumes, and have weaving or knitting facilities.
