More repairs works soon to improve roads at Coimbatore

Coimbatore:The Coimbatore Corporation will take up more repairs works soon to improve roads that are in a bad condition in various parts of the city, Mayor R. Venkatachalam has said. These include roads in residential layouts and also thoroughfares. After the five per cent increase in material and labour cost the Government had made on a persistent demand by contractors, the Corporation is keen on getting the works going, the Mayor said.

Quite a number of roads have been re-laid, but more needs to be done, the Mayor admits. "There are complaints every day from the people of poor road condition. We are aware of the problems and we are making efforts to have the repairs carried out soon," he says.Asserting that the civic body has already begun efforts to motorable roads, the Mayor says that works for Rs.30 lakh are on in Ward 26, off Tiruchi Road. "But, we are forced to keep a check every day on the condition of roads across the city because of public complaints, he says. Mr. Venkatachalam claims that he, Deputy Mayor N. Karthik and officials of the Corporation are taking stock of the situation in all the 72 wards in the city.

"We are trying to find out whether the officials are constantly contacting the contractors to know whether the latter are taking up the works that have been cleared by the Corporation," says Mr. Venkatachalam. The Mayor says that now that the rates for construction materials have been revised, the Corporation is getting tough on the contractor and asking them to begin works soon. On the poor condition of major thoroughfares such as D.B. Road (in R.S. Puram), Mr. Venkatachalam claims that efforts are being made to carry out repairs to the road.
Potholes
Worn out road surface, potholes and haphazardly covered pits that had been dug to lay cables torment motorists.
The Corporation wants to complete all road repairs before the onset of monsoon in June.
It has already announced in the budget a Rs.26.85-crore scheme for the formation and renovation of 167 roads.
The Government will provide a grant of Rs.3 crore and the Corporation plans to avail of Rs.18.50 crore loan.
The civic body wants to complete all these works by the end of June.
