Programme to tackle cases of familial discord

Programme to build up close familial bonds.Guidance on economic factors such as spending patterns.About 80 per cent of problems reported, reflect economic incompatibility Increasing consumerism has impacted lives in a big way, especially those of middle class. The Coimbatore Institute for Human Resource Development and Social Research has launched a special programme that is meant to tackle cases of familial discord and resolve issues successfully.

The number of such cases being reported has been on a steady rise in the last couple of years, says Bagirathi Ramanathan, Director of the Institute.Out of the cases received in the centre, 80 per cent are problems that reflect economic incompatibility, she points out."Increasing consumerism has impacted lives in a big way, especially the middle class."The "Family Restructuring" programme being offered by the Institute will provide complete guidance on economic factors, including spending patterns and scientific utilisation of finance for family matters.

"Most of the cases we receive here are those in which both the husband and wife are earning."Differences of opinion arise when it comes to spending for the family, especially when parents of either of the couple are staying with them," Ms.Bagirathi observes. The problem is ignored until it grows into a major issue and finally snowballs into a serious case of domestic violence and sometimes, even suicide. And, in the case of those people who hail from the upper-middle class sections of modern society, the social pressure also plays a vital role in determining how they behave under various circumstances.

The matter remains largely unresolved because of the mental block that such people have when it comes to approaching a counsellor and finding solutions to their problems. In the case of mismanagement of money, women and children in the family are impacted in a greater way, she adds.Though women are becoming increasingly aware of the Domestic Violence Act, violation of rights is still taking place in families."The problem is not confined to the middle class.Even people belonging to a high economic profile are approaching us for counselling services," she says.

The institute also has summer programmes in which all the members of a family can participate, gain insight and benefit as a group.Since it includes the couple, their parents and children, the problem can be identified and resolved. The institute can be contacted at 2550794 and 2478084.
