Residents plan to re-lay road

3.5-km road connects Avanashi Road with the Vilankurichi Panchayat It begins near Hope College and joins Sathyamangalam Road at Karattumedu Residents in Vilankurichi near Peelamedu plan to take up the re-laying of the Vilankurichi Road to express their resentment over the work not being taken up by either the Vilankurichi Panchayat or the Coimbatore Corporation.

Territory
The 3.5-km road connects Avanashi Road with the Vilankurichi Panchayat that is located on the city's border. It begins near Hope College on Avanashi Road and joins Sathyamangalam Road at Karattumedu. The residents took up on November 27 last year the re-laying of a portion of the road. It was stopped the following day when the Corporation stepped in to level with mud the stretch that fell on its territory.President of the Residents Awareness Association of Vilankurichi N.R. Ravishankar says that the residents have been waiting for four months following an assurance from the authorities concerned that the road will be re-laid totally. The association was formed last year to take up with the officials the various problems the residents faced in their layouts.

But, a 1000 ft-long stretch of the road is still in a poor condition as both the local bodies claim that it does not come under their limits. The secretary of the association, R. Kandasamy says in a letter to District Collector Neeraj Mittal that the Corporation has taken up the re-laying work only up to a pump manufacturing unit, saying that this spot is its boundary. The Vilankurichi Panchayat says it will re-lay the road up to its boundary at Palkarar Thottam bus stop.

Bad condition
With the stretch in between both the local bodies' territories in a very bad condition, the residents have decided to re-lay this portion themselves. Mr. Ravishankar laments that this is the only option available as this portion has no one to maintain it.
