Annual Fruit Show @ Coonoor

Udhagamandalam: With the curtains having come down on the two-day 111th Annual Floral Carnival at the Government Botanical Garden here on Sunday, the focus has shifted to the Annual Fruit Show scheduled for May 27 at the Sim's Park in Coonoor.

Even as arrangements are under way for the show, the much-abused botanical garden is recovering from the effects of hosting the main event of the summer tourist season.According to official sources over two lakh persons witnessed the flower show this year.On Monday also the flow of tourists to the garden was heavy. Several parts of the town wear a bruised and battered look.

The civic authorities have a major repair job on hand. In many parts, inadequacy of infrastructure such as underground drainage and roads has been exposed by a sharp increase in the flow of tourists during the weekend.Udhagamandalam Municipality Commissioner Seeni Ajmal Khan told The Hindu that about forty-seven tonnes of garbage had accumulated in various parts of the town on Saturday and Sunday against the daily accumulation of about thirty-seven tonnes. And what is more the season is considered to be over only with the conclusion of the racing season. Many regular visitors expressed concern over the show assuming characteristics of a village mela.
