Diabetic Retinopathy Programme for Rural India
Sankara Eye Centre and the Rotary Club of Coimbatore Central will launch on May 11 here a project to prevent among rural people diabetic retinopathy - blindness caused by diabetes.A press release from the centre said that the `Diabetic Retinopathy Programme for Rural India' would be carried out at a cost of Rs.1.5 crore.The objective was to prevent this `avoidable blindness'.Diabetic patients would be identified through a door-to-door survey in Pollachi, Udumalpet, Avanashi and Palladam taluks in Coimbatore District. It would cover a population of 15.78 lakh over three years. Diabetics would be screened for the disease every Sunday at a base camp in these areas.The release said that Microsoft Research, India, and the Centre had developed a software that would help educate the semi-literate and illiterate sections on common eye diseases. A special emphasis would be on problems caused by diabetes.
