Elephant's trouble,residents wants permanent solution

Irate residents of Chinnathadagam and Veerapandi, on the outskirts of the city, squatted on the road on Tuesday demanding a permanent solution to the problem of elephant herd straying into human habitations. With the mercury level soaring, man-animal conflict has been on the rise in this region for the last few weeks, with the pachyderms straying into human habitations in search of food and water.

A herd of three calves, one tusker and a female strayed into farmlands in Chinnathadagam and Veerapandi areas on Monday. Crops were destroyed. The agitated villagers on Tuesday decried the ad hoc solution provided by the forest department from time to time and sought a permanent solution. District Forest Officer I. Anwardeen, DFO (Agave) Ambrose, North Tahsilder N. Santhanam and police officers held talks with the residents and assured them of a permanent solution following which the road roko was withdrawn.

Mr. Anwardeen told reporters that compensation would be provided to the farmers for the damage caused by the elephants. He said the Government had cleared a proposal by the department for erecting solar electric fencing for 15 km in the fringe areas of the forest right from city border to Poonuthamman Koil. The solar electric fencing works would be completed this year, he said. The need and feasibility for deploying tamed elephants (kumkis) from Indira Gandhi Wildlife Sanctuary would also be explored, Mr. Anwardeen said. For the time being, two teams of forest officials including tribal watchers and anti-poaching staff from Pooluvampatti, Mettuppalayam and Periyanaickenpalayam have been deployed at Veerapandi area.Powerful searchlights and drums have been provided to the teams for chasing the elephants back into the jungles.
