TNAU's advise for sugar cane farmers
Tamil Nadu Agricultural University has advised sugar cane farmers to reduce the area under the cash crop this season to minimise the losses due to delayed cutting orders and payment by mills. The domestic and export market intelligence cell of the university's Centre for Agricultural and Rural Development Studies has made the recommendation after a study found that the growers were facing many problems that sapped the yield, says a release.Quoting statistics provided at the sugar summit and bio-ethanol conference of 2007, the study found that Indian sugar production and carryover stocks would be 26 million tonnes and 11.46 million tones during 2007-08. This might lead to overstocking of sugar and delayed cutting orders.
