Zero import duty on foundry raw materials

Foundry and pumpset industries here have sought the help of the Central and state government in charging zero import duty on foundry raw materials. Southern India Engineering Manufacturers' Association (Siema), Coimbatore District Small Industries' Association (Codissia) and Indian Institute of Foundrymen (IIF), have said Over the past one year, price of pig iron had shot up by more than 20 % but it was not available freely. Cost of metallurgical coke used has also gone up by about 23 %. Import of these raw materials is not economical even at 5% basic customs duty because of the special duty and freight charges which are adding upto 15 % of the basic price, said C V Shanmugasundaram, President, Siema. Small and tiny foundries are the worst hit by the rise in input price. As this had pulled down their profits, the situation has threatened even their closure, SV Jagadeesan, chairman, IIF said.
