School & trafic jam started
Chaos reigns on the road in front of a school near the Sungam Junction in the city. Chaos at the beginning of the academic year was evident on the roads on Monday. Motorists had to wade through congested roads in the peak hour thanks to the indiscriminate parking of vehicles along the school zones. The City police had last year impressed upon the heads of education institutions the need of letting the vehicles into their school premises both in the morning and evening to prevent traffic block. "By letting the vehicles into the school premises, we could not only reduce traffic snarls but also ensure the safety of the children," said City Police Commissioner C.K. Gandhirajan at a meeting with heads of educational institutions. While many schools complied with the request and allowed the vehicles to be parked on the school premises some did not which caused traffic jam.
On Monday 90 per cent of the schools reopened after summer vacation.Lone traffic constables had a hard time regulating traffic. Traffic was paralysed on Tiruchi Road near Ramanathapuram, Coimbatore Medical College Hospital (CMCH), Puliakulam and Sungam. Similar chaos happened on Avanashi Road near Hope College, Airport, Anna Statue, LIC Road, VOC Park and the collectorate. It caused hardship to office-goers.
As most of the schools functioned only for two to three hours on the first day parents waited near the schools with vehicles which occupied at least one to two third of the road space. In front of most of the nurseries and play schools, parents gathered in large numbers near the gate with anxiety, since many tiny tots were crying. It was time the traffic police ensured discipline in parking near schools, said motorists who were caught in traffic snarls. The City Police have instructed jurisdiction officers to talk to the school managements to avoid this problem besides deploying traffic policemen in adequate numbers near the school zone to regulate the flow of traffic.
