Talks about agri marketing

The importance of developing effective marketing infrastructure and the need to combine technologies with marketing techniques were stressed upon at the sensitisation programme on `Development/Strengthening of Agricultural Marketing Infrastructure, Grading and Standardisation', held at the Tamil Nadu Agricultural University here recently.K. Jeyanandhan, Senior Marketing Officer, Directorate of Marketing and Inspection, Chennai, said the marketing infrastructure would include dairy, poultry, fishery, livestock and minor forest produce, at the programme that was organised with the National Institute of Agricultural Marketing, Jaipur.

"Direct marketing should be promoted by reducing intermediaries to enhance the farmer's income. Grading, standardisation and quality certification system will be promoted to give a major thrust for enhancing pledge financing and marketing credit.A negotiable warehousing receipt system will be introduced. Also, forward and future markets will be promoted to stabilise the market system in order to increase farmers' income," Mr. Jeyanandhan said.


Mr. Jeyanandhan said any assistance for developing such infrastructure would be credit-linked and subject to sanction of the infrastructure project by commercial/co-operative/regional rural banks based on economic viability and commercial considerations.Rate of subsidy would be 25 per cent of the capital cost of the project. Maximum amount of subsidy shall be restricted to Rs. 50 lakh for each project.Entrepreneurs belonging to the SC/ST category, those from Northeastern states would be eligible for a higher amount.
