Traffic rule training for school students

The police and traffic wardens training the members of the Road Safety Patrol on the PRS Grounds in Coimbatore. The city police and the Traffic Wardens’ Organisation began a training programme for Road Safety Patrol (RSP) student-volunteers from schools in traffic regulation on Monday.

As many as 240 students were given training at the Police Recruits School Grounds at the launch of the programme that was attended by Deputy Commissioner of Police (Traffic) R. Tamilchandran and Chief Traffic Warden M. Sundararajan.Totally, 154 schools have been identified by the city police for the Road Safety Patrol programme. The Children’s Traffic Park on Dr. Balasundaram Road will be used to teach various aspects of traffic regulation.Only students of Ninth Standard and Plus-One would be drafted for patrolling . Those in the Tenth Standard and Plus-Two did not attend the programme as they would have to concentrate on their public examinations.

According to City Police Commissioner C.K. Gandhirajan, the RSP volunteers will focus on safe crossing of roads by students and their parents, traffic regulation (stopping vehicles at the crossing and signalling them to proceed) and also parking along roads near their schools. ]The volunteers will be supervised by a school security staff, a teaching or a non-teaching staff member and a traffic policeman. This training comes handy for the students to follow regulations themselves. The concept of safety patrol volunteers eliminates the need to post more policemen at the schools.Normally, three policemen are posted at every school in the morning and evening.
