Training in cotton cultivataion

A group of 26 cotton farmers, bureaucrats and businessmen from six West African countries is here for a 10-day training in cotton cultivation, value addition, quality aspects and business.The training is sponsored by the Ministry of External Affairs under the Indian Technical and Economic Cooperation (ITEC) Programme and will help in technical cooperation and create business opportunities for both the countries.

According to an official at the South India Textile Research Association, where the training is going on, West African nations have a lot of cotton producing States and about 80 per cent of the cotton produced is exported. Some of the features of West African cotton are that it is hand-picked and have “high ginned percentage”.A number of mills here also import cotton from these nations.
