Tree uprooted casues accident
Ooty:A car damaged by an uprooted tree on the Ooty- Lovedale road on Saturday.Two persons were killed as squally weather uprooted a large number of trees in several parts of the Nilgiris on Saturday.According to the police, a group of tourists from Mysore had hired the jeep at Gudalur to come to Ooty. A tree fell on the vehicle at Finger Post killing Archana Mohan (22), employed in a Larson and Toubro unit at Mysore, and driver Haneesh (27) of Manvayal. Two others were hospitalised with injuries.
In another incident, occupants of a car, including a cinematographer Rajiv Menon, had a providential escape when a tree fell on their vehicle on the Ooty-Lovedale Road. They were returning to Ooty after attending a function near Lovedale.Official sources said hundreds of trees were uprooted in different places, including Lord Wenlock Downs, Thalaikundah and Lovedale. During the 24 hours ending 8.30 a.m. on Saturday, Avalanchi received a record 562 mm rain followed by Upper Bhavani 475, Emerald 280, Gudalur 145, Ketti 140, Naduvatam 140, Devala 127, Glenmorgan 92, Kundah 80 and Ooty 70.
Personal Assistant (General) to Collector Kanagarathinam said about 360 acres of farm land had been submerged. Over 150 electricity poles had fallen. As a precautionary measure, power had been switched off at many places. The worst affected was Ooty taluk.
