Water level in the Siruvani Dam has dipped

Water level in the Siruvani Dam has dipped to 28 ft against the full reservoir level of 67.44 ft.This has brought down the supply of drinking water to the city, officials of the Coimbatore Corporation said during an inspection of the dam on Friday. When the scheme was implemented in 1931, it provided for a supply of 101 million litres a day (mld) for the city and suburbs. Of this, 87 mld was set aside for the city and the rest for the suburbs. The plunging water level in the dam now had led to the total drawal being cut to 70 mld.Of this, only around 55 mld was being supplied to the city.

"We still have water to make a comfortable supply and the monsoon will set in any moment," Mayor R. Venkatachalam said after visiting the dam.Deputy Mayor N. Karthik, other councillors and officials accompanied him.An additional pipeline would be laid to bring water from the dam to the city.A sum of Rs. 50 crore would be spent on this with grants and funds under the Jawaharlal Nehru National Urban Renewal Mission. The existing line was worn out and choked with silt.Removing it and laying a new line in its place would take time and disrupt supply. So, the new line would be laid parallel to the existing one, the Mayor said.

Corporation officials said that yet another representation would be made to the State Government to have the height of the dam raised by three feet.An appeal had already been submitted to the Kerala Government as the dam was on its territory.Former Mayor T. Malaravan submitted this appeal in a memorandum to former Kerala Chief Minister Oomen Chandy during the latter's visit here.
