Workshop for film making

Street children learning the art of film making at a workshop on documentary organised by Don Bosco Anbu Illam in the city. The creative pursuits of a group of children at the Don Bosco Anbu Illam are soon to be realised. The documentary they have shot will be screened for the public in the end of June.`Coimbatore Junction' will tell the children's own stories - how each one of them lived on the streets in poverty, hunger and squalor.

With the guidance from their mentor R.R. Srinivasan, a freelance documentary maker, more than 20 children at the home got ready to tell their tales and shoot the documentary by themselves.Starting with an orientation programme, in which they were shown more than 10 world classics, they were gradually familiarised with the basics of filmmaking.

"The documentary is now in the final stages of completion," says Mr. Srinivasan. The children chose the railway station and the bus stands as locations. The editing of the one-hour long documentary is in progress now with the help of Alaigal, a media education centre set up by Don Bosco in Tiruchi, where they will be exposed to the latest techniques in editing.

A majority of the children at Don Bosco Anbu Illam are picked up from the streets by volunteers and social workers. They beg on the streets and survive on left over food in railway stations and bus stands, until someone finds them and sends them to care homes for children. Some of these runaway children are sent back to their homes by the institution. But some others prefer to stay on at the institution, where they are educated, fed and taught to live a life of dignity. "This effort is aimed at making film-making accessible to them," says Fr. John Dharman, Director of Don Bosco Anbu Illam. Till June, it is going to be a period of heightened activity for the children: Giving the final touches to their documentary and anxiously awaiting it's screening.
