A pothole-ridden stretch on Mettupalayam Road gets a topping of debris on Monday after banners portraying the condition of the road came up.Residents and regular users of Mettupalayam Road revived on Monday their struggle to rid it of potholes. A part of the Nagapattinam-Gudalur-Mysore National Highway 67, the road has been in focus for more than two years because of the life-threatening potholes.

After giving a break to their struggle because of the re-laying of some portions, the residents put up a banner that had the picture of two skulls. “Danger” was printed above the skulls and “Do not enter” below. Also printed in large letters across the banner was a question addressed to the authorities concerned: “Do we need a journey towards death?” The Mettupalayam Road Protection Committee put up the banner. Its head M. Devendran said that the banner was put up late on Sunday night.

But, after officials came to know of this early on Monday, the potholes near Thudialur Police Station were hurriedly filled with debris.Even after this, vehicle users avoided this spot as the debris posed a greater danger than the potholes. The committee also submitted a petition to Collector Neeraj Mittal, appealing for speedy measures to reduce the risk of loss of lives and limbs on this road. “A number of people have died and many have suffered injuries over the last couple of years,” Mr. Devendran said. After having led the struggle for a good road so far, he said a safe ride on Mettupalayam Road remained a dream. The petition said that though announcements were made in newspapers that funds had been allocated for re-laying the road, only patchworks had been done. There was no change in the condition of the road between V.G. Hospital and Rakkipalayam.
