A home for the homeless aged
N.Vanitha, chairperson of Sharanalayam, interacting with the aged people who are offered food and shelter at the centre.Sharanalayam, a home that offers refuge to homeless children at Pollachi has now opened its doors to the aged who have no one to care for them.Senior citizens, especially those in the lower economic strata, who were not cared for by their children often ended up on the street, hungry and ailing, says N.Vanitha, Chairperson of Sharanalayam. “Some of them also develop serious health problems owing to poverty and negligence,” she adds. “We adopt such people and take care of their needs,” she says.
The staff of Sharanalayam who happen to spot such people on the street take them to the centre. They are provided food, clothing and shelter there. Currently, the centre has more than 35 such men and women. Sharanalayam’s ‘Akshayapathram’ project has been providing free noon meals to more than 55 people every day, “but these men and women who are discarded by their own children need much more than just food. They need love and affection,” Ms.Vanitha says.A majority of them suffered from severe health problems. Those who come across such disadvantaged people can contact the centre at 04259- 223321.
