Horlicks Wiz Kids inter-school competition

Auditorium in Coimbatore on Tuesday.Ricky Martin’s ‘Cup of Life’ was not just the cup of life at the Horlicks Wiz Kids 2007. It was what symbolised student-life, especially the spirit of the physically, intellectually and emotionally empowered student community of today. The students of Gitanjali School gave Martin’s ever so popular number a whole new dimension at the freestyle group dance competition.
The inter-school competition held here on Tuesday had more than 6,000 students from 55 schools in the city participating in it. The competitions spanned a variety of events including art, literature, music, dance and drama. Held for the 4th consecutive year in Coimbatore, the competition still attracted most of the reputed schools in the city from which students turned up in large numbers.After the cup of life, the audience were welcomed to the jungle by the students of SBOA Matriculation School, where a tribal chieftain and his lot swayed to the typical tribal beats. Then came the team from SRN School that instantly won the hearts of the audience with a chain of popular Tamil hits. ‘Remo’ leading to ‘kannum kannum nokia,’ touching a couple of other hits before finishing it with the hit of yesteryears ‘ennadi rakkamma,’ drawing a huge applause from the crowd. Amidst all the film songs was a sombre classical number by the little ones of Mani High School.
The intervals between programmes were utilised for organising games for the audience.This year, the competition also had the presence of Greenpeace, a non-profit organisation working for promoting environmental awareness. The students joined hands in supporting the ‘ban the bulb’ campaign, which was aimed at creating awareness on the threat posed by climate change.Horlicks Wiz Kids is held every year in more than 27 cities in the country, involving around two lakh students and 1,650 schools. The national finals in Bangalore would be attended by two finalists from each city. Two winners of the national finals would get an opportunity to visit Brazil.The item ‘Wiz Team’ was what determined the winners. Ten students were selected for the ‘Wiz Team’ out of which two would be selected to represent the city at the national level. They would have to introduce themselves, exhibit their talents and answer questions from the judges.
