‘Merry Maths’ CD realesed by retired principal
“Textbooks these days hardly inspire students to think,” says T.R. Soundararaja Rao, retired Principal of Sri Ramakrishna Mission Vidyalaya College of Education. They merely impart facts and provide no challenges to stimulate their thinking, he adds. Mr. Rao has developed a CD, titled ‘Merry Maths,’ which contains mathematical programmes, puzzles, and games designed to make mathematics interesting for students.“It’s just a mathematics teacher’s contribution to students who are interested in the subject,” he says and not designed to be commercialised, Mr. Rao asserts.
Having been an academician for more than 35 years, he feels the need to give something back to the field he came from. At the same time, it is also a favourite pastime for him. Formulating mathematical games and puzzles for children. The programmes will help increase numerical ability, knowledge of triangles, logical reasoning and problem solving skills in students from Class VIII to XII. “The puzzles are like brain teasers that will improve students’ thinking ability. “They will also give them something more than what is prescribed in their syllabus,” he adds. The CD dwells on concepts in higher arithmetic too such as polar graphs, which serve as an introduction to polar equations. It can also be used as an application of trigonometry and as a tool for aesthetic appreciation.
Mr. Rao tested the CD on a few students and the response was good. “It is not aimed at preparing students for any competitive examination,” he asserts. “It is just to give them a new dimension to their thought process.”Schools that are interested in learning more about ‘Merry Maths’ can contact Mr. T.R.Soundararaja Rao at 2693629.
