Picnic spot at Perur soon
Bird watchers and entertainment starved Coimbatoreans have good news. The administration is planning to develop a conservation reserve for wetland birds at Perur periyakulam about 12 km west of Coimbatore City.The District Collector, Neeraj Mittal and District Forest Officer, I.Anwardeen recently visited the tank spread over 250 acres in Perur and Sundakkamuthur villages and made an assessment of the facilities that could be provided for the tank.
The administration was planning to develop the three embankments, where gardens, watch towers and parking facilities could be provided for the tourists. The Government agencies concerned would be brought together for forming a coordination and management committee.The tank would be developed at an approximate cost of Rs 2.5 crore.The administration would explore the possibilities of sourcing funds from any of the Government departments and was also open to roping in private participation. This would improve the local economy of Perur.
Mr.Anwardeen said that the Forest Department, under the directions of the Conservator of Forests, Coimbatore Circle, P.C.Tyagi, was working on a proposal for converting the place into a conservation reserve for wetland birds under the new provisions of the Wildlife Protection Act, besides providing scope for the people to enjoy and appreciate nature during their leisure hours.
The tank has egrets, cormorants, darters, rosy pelicans and pelicans besides a host of other native and migratory bird species.
