1 year will save
Students dread examinations. But, over 1,400 candidates who wrote their supplementary examination on Monday at Bharathiar University were engulfed by a feeling of elation and relief. They were undergraduate and post-graduate students of the 2007 batch who had failed in a single subject. For R. Prasanna and K. Janani, both M.Sc. students of Chemistry from the CBM College, it was a heaven-sent opportunity that will pave way for them to become teachers, without having to wait a whole year. P. Mahalakshmi, a PG student in mathematics, too, is a grateful soul.
Under normal circumstances, they would have got an opportunity to clear the paper in November. But this time the university came up with the novel idea of giving them an opportunity to clear it at the earliest, on August 20, within a very short span of time after the results were published. The decision was taken after considering requests from candidates who had cleared all papers, save one. There were some with appointment letters, but without a provisional degree; others who wanted to pursue higher studies, but could not do so without a pass in the degree examination. If they had cleared their arrear paper in November they would have got a chance to pursue a higher degree only next academic year.
“The decision to conduct a supplementary examination was made on August 6. Applications were sent to colleges. Candidates applied by August 10. We did not except such a response. We had to prepare 318 question papers for the 1,458 candidates. Invigilators and examiners had to be arranged,” said Controller of Examinations B. Krishnamurthy. The mammoth task was completed in a week, thanks to the efforts of his team. Nearly 400 PG candidates took the examination in the forenoon and 1,045 UG candidates in the afternoon. PG valuation was expected to start immediately, while UG valuation was expected to begin on August 21.

The results were expected before August 25. Retotalling and revaluation was allowed for the UGs, while the PGs did not have such concessions. The arrears examination was the only succour left to them.“For most of them, August 31 is an important deadline – be it to take up a job or apply for another course. We will try to ensure that they have the relevant documents before that date,” assured the Controller.
