CCC welcomed checks in self financing engg collages

The Coimbatore Consumer Cause (CCC) has welcomed the recently conducted checks in self-financing engineering colleges to protect students from the menace of huge capitation fee and excess fee.The managements were in the practice of fixing the fee structure and capitation fee for management quota seats at their own discretion.Secretary of CCC K. Kathirmathiyon, in a memorandum to the Chief Minister, pointed out that it was the first time that such an action was initiated against the colleges and thanked the Government for it.

Otherwise professional education would have become unaffordable for middle income and low income group students. It was a fact known to all that many of the colleges collected excess fee and management quota seats were filled only through capitation fees for which generally no receipts were issued. Most of their admissions were over in January itself. The CCC welcomed the decision of the Government to initiate criminal action against the colleges that violated the rules and also the proposal to take up the issue with the All India Council for Technical Education for initiating action against such colleges. The CCC also requested the Government to conduct such surprise checks frequently. The State Government should also take up the matter with the Union Finance Minister and arrange for a through verification of accounts of the ‘Trusts’ of the self-financing colleges, where the money was said to be “parked”.CCC also suggested that the Government could collect the fee from the students and hand over the same to the college managements.
